The Western Art Academy teaches painting techniques.

"When we look back on cultures of the past, I don't know any case where we honor the accountants, the lawyers, or the bankers. But the artists survive. What we do today for young people who have this kind of talent, will go on and on."

--Mike Wells, President of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo

The Western Art Academy is an intense three-week immersion of advanced art instruction designed specifically for talented high-school juniors and seniors. Organized under the direction of the Museum of Western Art, in Kerrville, Texas, it offers students the rare opportunity to receive one-on-one instruction in painting and sculpting from well-known and respected professional artists.

Western Art Academy students are selected through juried competition. Judges base their decisions on the portfolios of artwork submitted, as well as on the maturity level of the finalists

What can students expect in the classroom?

Class time is divided evenly between sculpting and painting. The curriculum includes proven principles of art and design through which students are encouraged to display their individual creativity. Students work with the benefit of live models in the classroom, and all art supplies are provided. Highly talented instructors know how to inspire and motivate.

What about time spent away from the classroom?

Through special field trips, students meet 'real-world' artists who apply their talents in business, industry, and fine art. Weather permitting, students do 'plein air' painting at a nearby ranch or park. Evenings and weekends -- it's time for a break! -- including pizza, swimming, hiking, movies and more.
